Historical Battles Series -- La Rothiere

Historical Battles Series -- La Rothiere

Postby [N]Isaac_Brock » Tue Jan 11, 2011 2:34 pm

Last month I made a private N communications post, suggesting a historical battle series, and received much encouragement.

So here I am posting publicly on it, and seeking assistance in making it a reality.

I'm proposing that in honour of the greatest battles of the Napoleonic era that we pay homage by replaying specific battles on, or fairly close to, the anniversary date of said encounter.

The first battle in this series that I am proposing is the battle of La Rothiere, between Napoleon and Blucher's Austrian, Russia and minors on Feb. 1, 1814. The anniversary date fast approaches, and I feel this is a historically significant and, I feel, would be an interesting battle to recreate.

I am proposing that we gather and replay the battle on either February 1 or, if combatants are unable to do so, on Feb. 3 or Feb. 4.

Situation: Hemmed in against the Aube River, with only one line of retreat over the bridge at Lesmont, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte attempted to extricate most of his army of 45,000 soldiers in the face of 107,000+ troops of the Russian, Austrian, Bavarian and Wurttemburg forces commanded by Gen. Gebhard von Blucher.
Napoleon claimed he never wanted to fight this engagement but Blucher had other ideas. He pressed the retreating French and forced them to take the field. The result was a holding action and while Napoleon did succeed in fending off his attackers, he was forced to retreat under the cover of darkness. It's a historically significant battle because it marks the first time Napoleon was defeated on French soil.

Suggested scenario: The bridge at Lesmont is far to the rear, so it is not a viable objective. Therefore, the town of Brienne le Chateau represents the key objective in the battle. If this location is taken by the Coalition, and held until completion of the battle, the result is a strategic victory for the Allies -- historically, it would have meant that French forces would be cut off and trapped on the east side of the Aube, a major disaster for the French which could have meant a swift end to Napoleon's regime. A tactical victory is gained on taking, and holding, all objectives except for Brienne Le Chateau.
To achieve a tactical victory, the French must hold Brienne le Chateau and one other objective: Dienville, Vieux Brienne, Chaumesnil, Petit Mesnil or La Rothiere itself. A strategic victory for the French is achieved by holding these objectives: Petit Mesnil, La Rothiere, Dienville, Vieux Brienne and Brienne le Chateau.

Suggested time limit: One Hour

Estimated Prussian Forces: 110,000

Estimated French Forces: 45,000

Casualties: Estimated at about 6,000 each, although considering the significantly smaller size of the French forces, these were unacceptable casualties.

This could be a very interesting battle because of both the situation, and forces, involved. It is essentially a defensive battle for the French and it is not at all implausible that they could achieve a tactical, or strategic, victory in this situation.

Force composition
While not historically exact (French forces represented about 40% of those deployed by the Allies) in this scenario, it will be modified to represent 50% of the forces. That means in a battle, the French can only take half of the available forces — meaning, in a 4v4, each French player may use 5,000 of the 10,000 total, while there is no restriction on the Coalition. They can use all 10,000. Or, conversely, it could be a 2v4 with full funds for everyone.

Available sides:
Coalition: Russian, Austria, Bavaria, Wurttembergers
French: No allies

As an aside, while the forces were commanded by Blucher (with Gneiseau as his chief of staff) there were no Prussian troops engaged -- it was mainly Russians and Austrians with a strong contingent of Bavarians and Wurttemburgers
While there are four sides to choose from, it would not be historically accurate to see two sides playing Bavaria and two playing Wurttemburg.
To reflect the number of troops present, one side must choose Russia and there must be one Austrian player. There can be two Russian and two Austrian players, but there cannot be more than one Wurttemberg and one Bavarian faction.

But...

I need some HELP! I'm going to go through current maps over the next few days to see if there's one that's closely approximate to La Rothiere. The closest one I've found (and it's a fairly close approximation, actually) is France 4 -- we could even set victory conditions for this map specifically if a better one can't be found.

Any help from map-makers and otherwise, that would be appreciated!

Great idea Isaac.

My comments,

Please talk to fullin and let him mke a map for it. Said map can be included in the next lordz release as la rothiere. So please draw an approximate map, give it to fullin and have him do the map prior to that.

Please talk to cyn, get an approximate OOB of the parties involved. We can simulate less troops, but did the french hve more elite troops? what quality were they? From the oob we could take a specific set up for each side.

I suggest the battle is played as 4 vs 2. The time limit would be an hour. Coalition: 1 player Russia, 1 Austria, 1 Bavaria, 1 Wuttenmburg. France: 2 French

1 major and 1 minor faction of the coalition will start the battle immidiately, 15 min later the second major can move, 15 min later (so 30 min from start) the second minor can move.

So we have to research this a little more in depth to make the battle fun.

Get to work guys, excellent idea isaac.

Thanks for the feedback/comments, VC.

I've done a bit of the legwork -- but obviously more needs to be done. I found a map which is fairly good, and going to this link: http://napoleonistyka.atspace.com/La_Ro ... e.htm#_map

As for OOB, I found an excellent website that has all of that detail, down to the units. I've posted the complete OOB below.

Good, what we should do is get the % of cav/line and art from the oob and use it in our selection for example 40% inf 30% cav and 30% art

Then in each branch we can get the % of elite/line/guard and make our oob this way. Our total units for the french will be 40 and coalition 80 , we can use these percentages to determine what armies are bought.

The force ratio for the French is fairly easy to figure out because the OOB gives us the unit-by-unit breakdown of engaged forces.
Infantry formed about 30,000 men, or 65% of the total engaged force. Of that number, almost half (11,923 or 45%) were Young Guard, or elite, elements to the army.
Cavalry constituted about 12,800, or 30% of the total engaged force — of that total, 7,100 , or 60%, were elite cavalry composed of either Young Guard or Old Guard elements (Old Guard cavalry alone was 3,685).

With the Coalition, it's not as precise because there's no force ratio break down -- merely a vague OOB description of total forces with imprecise large unit totals. If we take the ratios as listed, we find that almost 89,000 infantry were engaged, or 90% of the force engaged. Of those infantry units, 18,000 were grenadiers or foot guards, which can be considered elite. That makes up 20% of the engaged infantry.
Cavalry force, according to the included list, is about 6,000, half of which are Cuirassier or Horse Guards, which we can consider elites. I find this number exceedingly low and therefore I'm going to look into the battle a bit more and see if I can find a more complete OOB for the Coalition.

And Fullin, why would Desisaix oppose the name? Just curious :smug:
